Requirements To Study Medicine At SMU (MEDUNSA) 2023

A short guide on the admission requirements to study at the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) formerly Medical University Of South Africa (MEDUNSA). The school is focused solely on training and producing medical practitioners. It is also involved in analysis and training to boost the skills of medical practitioners. Students that desire to study Medicine at the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) must meet certain requirements to gain admission.

The requirements to study Medicine at SMU include a National Curriculum Statement (NCS) with a minimum of four subjects out of the seven subjects selected from the assigned list in Grade 12, at least 50% achievement level with 4 subjects, a matriculation exemption certificate issued by the matriculation board of South Africa, a pass mark in Mathematics, physical science and a combined rating of 9 and higher grade.

Requirements To Study Medicine At SMU (MEDUNSA)

• A National Curriculum Statement (NCS) with a minimum of four out of the usual seven subjects that have been selected from the assigned list in Grade 12. The assigned subjects are agricultural science, accounting, business studies, consumer studies, dramatic arts, history, geography, information technology, and economics.
•  A score of a minimum achievement level of 50% with the four subjects. 
• Three languages comprise the English language and two other recognized South African languages. 
• At least 18 years old at the time of admission.
• A  matriculation exemption certificate administered by the South African matriculation board.
• A pass mark in Mathematical Physical Science, a collective grade of 9 and higher, or a standard grade. 
• A minimum admission point of 35 points. 

What Do You Need To Study For The MBChB Certification

To be eligible for the competitive MBChB certification at SMU, the university’s point system converts your grade 12 achievement to an admission point for the available programs. The admission point is used by the SMU to calculate your admission point. The NSC level of achievement is awarded for percentages that you score in your Grade 12 subjects. 

An admission point of 28 at least, in addition to a program-specific minimum score in specific subjects is required to study for the MBChB certification. Specific levels of achievement are required for certain school subjects for a prospective candidate to be admitted to the MBChB program. 

NSC Levels of Achievement 

1. NSC level 2 achievement is between 30% to 39%.
2. NSC level 3 achievement is between 40% to 49%. 
3. NSC level 4 achievement is between 50% to 59%.
4. NSC level 5 achievement is between 60% to 69%.
5. NSC level 6 achievement is between 70% to 79%.
6. NSC level 7 achievement is between 80% to 89%.
7. NSC level 8 achievement is between 90% to 100%. 

How To Score a Minimum of 28 in your AP Score

1. In 3 academic subjects, you need a minimum achievement level of 5 which is 60%. Each subject earns you 5 admission points which equal 15 Admission points. 
2. In another 3 academic subjects, you need to have an achievement level of 4 which is 50%. Each subject then earns you 4 admission points which equal 12 Admission points.
3. In the subject of Life orientation, you need an achievement level that will get you 1 point or higher. 
4. A sum of all Admission points will be equal to 28 points which is the least admission point that is acceptable.

Program Specific Requirements

1. You need to pass Mathematics at an achievement level of 5 (60%).
2. You need to pass English at an achievement level of 4 (50%).
3. You need to pass Physical Science at an achievement level of 5 (60%). 

Requirements to Study Bachelor of Diagnostic Radiology B. RAD (DIAGN.) At SMU

The Bachelor of Diagnostic Radiology B. RAD (DIAGN) degree program has a distinct set of requirements that interested candidates must meet to be considered for admission. Due to capacity and population reasons, only a fixed number of candidates can be admitted to the Bachelor of Diagnostic Radiology degree program. Admission Requirements to Study B. RAD at SMU include:

1. Applicants must be at least 18 years old at the time of admission. 
2. Applicants must have a Matriculation exemption certificate issued by the South African Matriculation Board. 
3. Pass marks in Mathematics, Physical Science, and a combined rating of 9 on standard grade.
4. NSC examination with a minimum of 4 subjects passed out of the 7 school subjects with a minimum of level 4. 
5. At least 24 Admission points. 
6. You need to pass Mathematics with a minimum achievement level of 4 (50% to 59% ).
7. You need to pass the English language with at least an achievement level 4 (50% to 59%).
8. You need to pass the English language with at least an achievement level 4 (50% to 59%). 

Matriculation Exemption Certificate

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age at the time of admission, and must also have a matriculation exemption certificate issued by the South African matriculation board. They must have pass marks in mathematics, and physical science, and a combined rating of 9 on higher or standard grades.

Candidates are also required to have taken the national senior certificate examinations, and must have passed at least 4 of the 7 school subjects with a minimum level of 4 (50%).

National Senior Certificate (NSC) Applicants 

The designated National Senior Certificate subjects for applicants to study Bachelor of Diagnostic Radiology  include:

1. Life Sciences (formerly Biology).
2. Mathematics.
3. Three languages of which one must be the English language and two other recognized South African languages. 
4. Accounting.
5. Agriculture Science.
6. Business Studies (formerly Business economics).
7. Consumer Studies (formerly Home Economics).
8. Dramatic arts.
9. Engineering graphics and design (formerly technical drawing).
10. Economics.
11. Geography.
12. History.
13. Information Technology.
14. Music.
15. Religious Studies.
16. Physical Science.
17. Visual Arts.

Admission points   

• National senior certificate
• 2: 30% to 39%
• 3: 40% to 49%
• 4: 50% to 59%
• 5: 60% to 59%
• 6: 70% to 79%
• 7: 80% to 89%
• 8: 90% to 100%

A minimum point score of 24 is required for admission to the B. RAD program. That is in addition to getting specific points in certain designated subjects.

• You need to Pass Mathematics with a minimum achievement level of 4 (50% to 59%)
• You need to pass Physical Science with a minimum achievement level of 4 (50% to 59%)
• You need to pass the English Language with a minimum achievement level 4 (50% to 59%) which is a total of 12.
