Ukwazi School of Nursing (Roodeport/Potchefstroom) Fees, Admission Requirements & Form (2023)

Being a nursing school in South Africa, the Ukwazi School of Nursing is regulated by the South African Nursing Council.

In addition, the school has been accredited by the council of higher education and also registered by the South African Qualifications Authority.

Ukwazi School Nursing Application Form

The school normally conducts his yearly intake in January of every year. Any applicant wishing to get admitted into the school is expected to fill out the prescribed form and also contact the school for more information. 

Also, an information brochure that explains the dates of new intakes, fees payable, course content, etc will be available for any applicant through fax, email, or personal collection.

Ukwazi School Of Nursing Requirements

First, it must be known that the decision to admit an applicant into any educational study is the right, responsibility, and prerogative of Ukwazi School of Nursing in accordance with section 37 (1) of the Higher Education Act, 1997.

  • Admission Points Score (APS)

In order to get admitted into the school, a minimum APS must be made by the applicant. This is different from the programmed-specific requirement, however. Any applicant with the highest APS will receive more preference during the admission selection process.

In the table above, the first (*) implies Independent Examination Board, and the second (**) implies National Certificate (Vocational)

The Admission Points Score is usually calculated by summing the points for the best six subjects of an applicant as shown in his or her result. Note however that Life Orientation is usually excluded from the calculation. 

Admission Requirements For Higher Certificate In Auxiliary Nursing

To get a Higher Certificate in Auxiliary Nursing, the following requirement must be met

  • National Senior Certificate pass certified by UMALUSI and endorsed with admission to higher education (higher certificate, diploma, or degree)
  • 40% or more (NSC Level 3) in English as Home Language or First Additional Language (English being the language of learning and teaching (LOLT) at Ukwazi School of Nursing)
  • 50% or more (NSC Level 4) in Life Sciences/Biology which is a compulsory subject
  • A score of at least 16 points on the scoring scale set out above as achieved in the National Senior Certificate (thus APS=16) in the applicant’s best 6 subjects excluding Life Orientation.

It should be noted however that an applicant can still be considered for eligibility if the applicant is without Life Sciences/Biology in matric or whose mark is below the minimum achievement level of NSC4. 

The applicant only has to successfully complete the school’s bridging course which is currently known as the Assistant Course by having

  • An average mark of 75% or more
  • A minimum mark of 50% in Anatomy and Physiology Modules

Admission Requirements For Diploma in Nursing (Staff Nurse)

In order to get admitted into the Diploma of Nursing Science Program with a National Senior Certificate, the following criteria must be met

  • National Senior Certificate pass certified by UMALUSI and endorsed with admission to higher education (diploma or degree)
  • 40% or more (NSC Level 3) in English as Home Language or First Additional Language (English being the language of learning and teaching (LOLT) at Ukwazi School of Nursing)
  • 60% or more (NSC Level 5) in Life Sciences/Biology which is a compulsory subject
  • A score of at least 19 points on the scoring scale set out above as achieved in the National Senior Certificate (thus APS=19) in the applicant’s best 6 subjects excluding Life Orientation.

It should be noted however that an applicant can still be considered for eligibility if the applicant is without Life Sciences/Biology in matric or whose mark is below the minimum achievement level of NSC5.

The applicant only has to successfully complete the school’s bridging course by having

  • An average mark of 80% or more
  • A minimum mark of 60% in Anatomy and Physiology Modules

Courses 

The nursing courses offered in the University include the following

  • Higher Certificate In Auxiliary Nursing
  • Diploma in Nursing (Staff Nurse)

The school is however on the journey of increasing the number of courses offered at the institution.
