Becoming A Teacher In South Africa

Studying teaching means you have an interest in becoming a teacher in the country. This of course is a very nice thing to do. However, it is necessary to know what one would love teaching and settle for it first before anything else. Additionally, you should decide on the age group you want to opt for too

It should be noted that there are four different levels of teaching in South Africa. They are:

– The foundation phase (which includes Grade R to 3)

– The intermediate phase (which is from Grade 4 to 6

– The senior phase (which includes Grade 7 to 9)

– The further education and training phase (which is from Grade 10 to 12).

 

It should also be added that those aspiring to be teachers in South Africa can decide to opt for one of two study options. They are: 

1. 4-year Bachelor of Education (BEd): Here, you are going to the University not just to acquire knowledge but to also get armed with skills of passing knowledge in the classroom. You are already aware you are going into the academic world and you will acquire all you need from University. 
2. 3-to-4-year Bachelor’s degree, to be then followed by a 1-year Postgraduate Certificate in Education: Here, you might have studied any other course in the University, but still want to find yourself in the teaching field. There is really a difference between acquiring knowledge and dispensing knowledge. Hence, it is not enough to start teaching just because you have a degree. Rather, you should still ensure that you get PGCE where you learn the ropes of teaching.

This path helps to construct one’s degree accordingly. Nevertheless, it should be noted that if one is to study a PGCE, one will need to choose certain courses while an undergraduate in the University. Even before being here, the aspiring teacher has to choose the following matric subjects to study one of the four teaching levels:

– Teaching Foundation Phase

It is required you pass Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy in Grade 12 and have a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.

– Intermediate Phase teacher 

It is required to have passed Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy in one’s matric year and have a Bachelor’s Degree in two of the following: Natural sciences, Language(s), Mathematics and Statistics, Linguistics, Historical studies and archaeology, Environmental and geographical science, Music, Psychology, Drama, Fine art, Human movement studies, Dance, Information systems/computer science

– Senior Phase

If you really want to teach Senior School subjects, you are to study two teaching subjects while at your degree, with a minimum of two years of study in each.

As you should have identified already, teaching is serious business, in every serious society. We can’t really place a difference between the fate of society and the current state of its education. Teaching is building. We have to do all it takes to build effective folks by ensuring the teachers are capable and qualified.
