The North-West University (which is commonly known as NWU) is a public university heavily involved in Research. The University operates three campuses in Potchefstroom, Mahikeng, and Vanderbijlpark, all in the country of South Africa. The head offices and administrative center of the university are located on the Potchefstroom campus. North-West University is rapidly growing and has now become one of the largest universities in South Africa by student population.

NWU came about through the merger of Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education and the University of North-West which was formerly known as the University of Bophuthatswana.

The first thing to do is get a student number. To do that all you have to do is go to the online application platform (the school website), Click on New application, Click on Create new student number and complete all the fields (provide your personal information). 

Please note that being issued with a student number does not mean that you have completed the application process, or that an application is successful. Please ensure that you complete the whole process of registration. Incomplete applications will not be processed by the University.

Step 2: Log in

After registering, the next step is to successfully log in. you do this with the student number and PIN number you created. 

Step 3: Select your Courses/Programs

The next step is to select the program you intend to study, and the qualifications you intend to earn. Please ensure that you complete all the fields. It is important to be sure of the qualifications, modes of delivery and curricula. You may consult the yearbook or prospectus, or write to the University for Clarification.

Step 4: Upload Required Documents

In order for your application to be successful, the University requires you to provide digital copies of the following documents, uploaded directly to its registration portal: Available grade 12 marks (or gr 11 if the grade 12 marks are not available yet), or if the applicant has a matric certificate. You also need to provide a copy of your ID, and if you are transferring from another institution; a Copy of your academic record. International students need A copy of relevant results and a copy of their passport.

Step 5: Submit Application

The process is completed when you click on the button that says Submit Application. By so doing the University receives and saves your information and documents for processing. 

Payable Fees

For the incoming academic session, entrants will not be required to pay a registration fee.

North-West University Late Application Dates & Registration Closing Dates

North-West University’s closing date for applications is as follows: Applications for General Courses (Non-selection courses) will close on 30 September 2021, while Students applying for the Faculty of Health Sciences must apply before 30th of June 2021.

How to apply for master’s degree and doctoral studies at NWU:

All applications are to be done online in a similar manner to the Undergraduate Courses. The first step is to get a Student number. Please be reminded that getting a student number/university number does not imply that the applicant has been accepted, or that a registration is successful. Such numbers are issued for administrative purposes only.

Please fill in all your information as requested. All documents must be certified by a commissioner of oaths, attorney or (where appropriate) a university official.

If you are seeking admission based on any of your qualifications obtained outside South Africa, an evaluation certificate as issued by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) is required. Applicants should therefore first apply for the evaluation certificate from  SAQA.

Please remember that if any of the documents you submit were issued in your maiden name, then a certified marriage certificate is required as proof of marriage.

Additional information or documentation may be required by the relevant faculty.

International Students:

 All international students must pay the full amount for their proposed study, including tuition and all relevant costs in advance, as a rule, before registration can be finalised.

 Upon receipt of all the relevant documents, your application will be evaluated by the relevant school authorities. The process of vetting international students is thorough, and time consuming; it can sometimes take up to six months to process an application.

 All prospective international students must report to the International Office at the university as soon as they arrive on campus so as to receive assistance regarding study permits and accommodation. Please have the following handy when reporting to the International Office:

 A sworn statement or bank guarantee to ensure that you have access to the necessary finances that will enable you to undertake your studies, and also cover all your living expenses for the full duration of your studies;

Proof of medical cover or insurance valid for the duration of your studies at North-West University. If you do not already have this, the International Office will provide assistance if needed.
