This Programme in Short Term Insurance Associateship is a programme designed by UNISA and the Insurance Institute of South Africa. This programme should take 12 months to complete, and is targeted at Licentiate members who aspire to become IISA Associate members, as well as students who wish to improve their knowledge of the short-term insurance industry.

This course supports capacity building in the short-term insurance industry in South Africa and also provides individuals with an opportunity to become an Associate of the IISA. After this short learning programme, many students have gone on to become insurance professionals, taking up employment with insurance companies and agencies, and selling policies directly to clients.

In order to be accepted for this programme you need an appropriate NQF5 level qualification with a minimum of 120 credits, as well as an appropriate national diploma or B degree.

Course in the Fundamentals of Insurance (76902)

This Course in the Fundamentals of Insurance will take Six months to complete. The programme is designed for new appointees to the financial services industry who need to have a basic understanding of the fundamentals of insurance. Many of the past enrollees have been workers in vehicle tracking companies, travel agencies, as well as insurance brokers, and staff members of banks. The course gives a basic understanding of the various aspects of insurance, helping workers in finance perform better.

To be accepted into this programme you need to have an NQF level 4 qualification or higher.

Personal Insurance Products and Practice – ISR1501

This personal insurance Product and Practice is one of the short-term insurance courses at UNISA, designed for people who are involved in the insurance industry in South Africa, especially those involved with selling personal insurance. This course is therefore designed to equip students with the necessary knowledge, values, and skills to be able to discuss, analyse and assess the fundamental concepts involved in putting together a good personal insurance policy.

In order to be accepted into this program, you need to have an NQF level: 5, or 12 credits.

Commercial Insurance Products and Practice – ISR1502

Commercial Insurance Products and Practice is a programme designed for people who are involved in the selling of commercial short-term related services and products. This course is designed to equip students with the necessary knowledge, values, and skills to explain, insurance products to their clients, as well as to analyse and assess the fundamental concepts of commercial short-term insurance.

This is a Higher Certificate programme; and to be accepted into it you need to have an NQF level: 5, and 12 Credit.

Claims Management – ISR1503

This Claims Management course is designed for people working in the short-term insurance industry which requires a basic knowledge of claims management. The programme is designed to equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills needed to explain, discuss, and assess the fundamental concepts of insurance, especially as regards claims management in short-term insurance policies.

This programme is a Higher Certificate course, and to be accepted you need to have an NQF level: 5, and 12 Credits. 

Risk Management and Insurance – ISR1504

This Risk Management and Insurance programme is designed for anybody working in the short-term insurance industry, and who needs basic knowledge of risk management. This programme is designed to equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills needed to explain and analyze the fundamental concepts of insurance, especially as it concerns risk management, with special reference to short-term risk exposures.

This is a Higher Certificate course, and to be accepted you need to have an NQF level: 5, and 12 Credits.

Principles of Life Insurance – ISR1505

This Principles of Life Insurance programme is designed for people who are involved in the life insurance field.  Possibly those who sell Life Insurance directly to clients. The purpose of this programme is to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to explain to their prospective clients the products and services on offer.

This is a Higher Certificate course, and to be accepted you need an NQF level: 5, and 12 Credits.

Higher Certificate in Insurance -90013

This Higher Certificate in Insurance course is designed for those employed by short-term insurance companies and insurance brokers. This course will help enrollees fulfill the Insurance Institutes’ requirement for membership. It may also be useful to those not employed in the Insurance Industry, but who want to obtain the credits attached to the Higher Certificate in order to get work in the insurance sector.

This qualification will be presented using both online and distance learning modes, however, it will be discontinued after 2023.
